Susan Guihan Guasp

My pieces are personal passages using the landscape as my inspiration. I have always been captivated by the play of light on form. The natural light dominates my interpretation of each motif. I am seduced by chiaroscuro lighting through my search for the quintessential landscape. I often take photos, create sketches from motifs throughout Long Island, or invent the piece through my vision. My main concern is with the light and atmosphere as I dramatically represent it with exaggerated contrast of light and shadow and other atmospheric effects. Often featured in my work is my attraction to the turbulent mood of ephemeral skies.

My influences are Anselm Kiefer with his monochromatic palette and strong voice represented in his work, Ansel Adams' magnificent vision of nature, and Rembrandt with his great mastery and poetic etchings.

I mainly work with the absence of color, expressive gestural mark-making, and vast organic forms. The result of my work is to express the mysterious and majestic beauty of nature's energy. Evoking feelings that are represented in the choice of creating solitary landscapes with no human presence. Many of my pieces are inwardly emotional and personal.
